We were recently talking in my International Relations class about how so many countries in the world were created out of the arbitrary divisions that imperialist countries made. Probably the most explicit example being how Africa’s borders look almost grid-like because of the organized division amongst European imperialists, rather than being divided by natives based on common culture and heritage. It’s worth thinking about what borders mean and why they exist.
